Treatment of retracted fingers (Dupuytren's contracture).

Dupuytren's contracture is one of the most common diseases of the hand. Its origin is not fully understood. Scarring changes begin to form in the fascia of the palm and the fingers are gradually drawn into the palm, causing the normal function of the hand to be disrupted.

How is the operation performed?

The operation is usually performed under local infiltration anesthesia (the hand is numbed) or shoulder general anesthesia (the whole arm is numbed) and a pressure bandage is placed on the forearm to prevent excessive bleeding in the operated area.

The method and scope of the operation are selected individually, assessing each case. During the operation, the parts of the aponeurosis of the hand damaged by the disease are removed, the joints are freed. If necessary, the area where the tissue is missing is covered with a skin plastic.

What is important to pay attention to after surgery?

• Light movements of the hand can be performed the day after the operation, but active and normal movements of the hand are possible only after 2-3 weeks, after the wounds have healed.
• Wounds should be bandaged every 2-3 days.
• Sutures are removed from the wounds after 2 weeks, when the wound has completely healed.
• Hand function is fully restored after one month.
• It is important to start exercise 2-3 weeks after surgery, when the wound has completely healed.
