Treatment of De Quervain's disease

Who is treated with surgery for De Quervain's disease?

Surgical treatment of the disease is used when discomfort is experienced and the disease cannot be overcome by conservative methods (for example, physical therapy, pain-relieving corticosteroid injections).

The surgical operation is performed after assessing the person's level of physical activity, extent of injury, general physical health, and identifying risk factors that may influence the results of surgical treatment.

How to prepare for surgery?

Special preparation for the procedure is not required, but it is important to note that you will undergo a surgical operation during which regional anesthesia is applied. For this reason, you should at least temporarily give up bad habits, because alcohol and tobacco can affect the body's recovery and healing.

Targeted consultation of a rehabilitator or physiotherapist regarding physical preparation before and after surgery. General health examinations are also recommended.

Postoperative period and healing

Special care

In the first days after the operation, you may feel pain, numbness, swelling, but it is very important not to injure the operated area: try to keep the arm raised for 2-3 days, try not to move it as much as possible.

If you want to relieve swelling and swelling, you can use ice or another source of cold - keep it for about 10-15 minutes and repeat the procedure every few hours. Important: do not put it on the skin directly, wrap it in a clean cloth and a bag so that the condensate does not wet the postoperative wounds. You can also take pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medications prescribed by your doctor.

Healing

Light movements of the hand can be performed 1-2 days after the operation, but for the first 2-3 weeks after the operation, avoid heavy physical exertion, do not strain the operated hand and wrist. Do not lift heavy objects, do household chores (for example, cleaning rooms, folding clothes, etc.). Bandage the wound regularly every 2-3 days.

With your doctor's supervision, you can perform special exercise and physical rehabilitation exercises that will promote healing and strengthen the hand's function. Following all instructions, the operated area will recover within 4-6 weeks.

Scarring

Surgical treatment for De Quervain's disease involves small incisions in the skin, thus avoiding large scars. Using the means prescribed by the doctor for the healing of scars, they quickly turn pale and soon become practically invisible.
