Gynecomastia

Enlarged male breasts due to excessive growth of glandular or fatty tissue, also known as gynecomastia, affect almost 30% of men. It will not be possible to get rid of gynecomastia either with the help of sports or diets, since the cause of its formation is not always the accumulation of fatty tissue. When gynecomastia occurs due to excess glandular tissue, the only way to get rid of it is plastic surgery.

When is gynecomastia treatment performed?

According to doctors, gynecomastia can be congenital or begin to form at various stages of life - during adolescence, puberty, and old age. A number of other factors can affect the production of mammary glands: an excess of female sex hormones or hormonal activity disorders, obesity, various diseases of the liver, kidneys, thyroid gland, testicles, medications used. In addition, gynecomastia can affect oncological breast diseases and be a sign of the disease, so it is recommended to consult a doctor and undergo an ultrasound examination if the gland increases.

Men with gynecomastia complain of painful breasts, difficulty in sports or engaging in active physical activity. In many cases, they suffer from psychological complexes, because they are ashamed to undress, they cannot relax on the beach, they feel discomfort in their intimate life.

Gynecomastia surgery can be performed on patients who are at least 18 years old, since enlarged breasts during puberty can disappear on their own when hormonal activity normalizes. It is important to know that gynecomastia surgery is not performed if the patient has a viral or bacterial infection, severe breast disease.

How to prepare for gynecomastia surgery?

First of all, before the operation, the desired result is discussed with the doctor, all the necessary tests are performed, and the patient's medications, diseases and allergies are discussed. Please note that it is recommended not to take anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery, as this may increase the risk of bleeding. It is recommended not to smoke for at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.

How is gynecomastia surgery performed?

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2 hours. During the operation, the plastic reconstructive surgeon makes an incision along the lower edge of the areola of the nipple and removes excess glandular tissue. If the cause of the breast enlargement is adipose tissue, liposuction (fat removal) is also performed during the same operation. A drain may be left in place for 24-48 hours after surgery.

If dissolvable sutures are used during the operation, they do not need to be removed. Immediately after the operation, the patient is fitted with a surgical corset, which is recommended to be worn for at least 4-6 weeks. For at least a month, it is recommended to sleep on your back, not to lift up hard.

Healing and scarring

After the operation, pain is felt for several days, the chest may be partially numb. If pain is felt, pain and inflammation medications prescribed by the doctor are used. A small scar remains at the incision site, but fades over time and becomes barely noticeable. A course of lymphatic drainage massages is recommended for faster healing after surgery.

Physical activity

It is possible to return to the regular rhythm of life after a few days, but it is recommended to avoid sports and heavy physical activity for at least a month.
