Facelift

Over the years, natural aging processes do not overtake anyone - the skin gradually sags, wrinkles form, and fatigue is visible on the face. Rhytidectomy, or facelift surgery, is a great way to stop time, at least for a little while. Although this operation is more often performed on older patients, young patients also turn to plastic surgeons due to the intensification of the rhythm of life, abuse of sun baths and solariums.

Who can have facelift surgery?

Natural aging processes

A person's face ages gradually - the outer corners of the eyes and lips droop, the skin of the eyelids, cheeks, lower jaw line loses its sharpness, the neck relaxes, the face looks tired. Full facelift surgery is intended for patients seeking firmer, smoother facial skin and a younger appearance.

Significant weight loss

The skin of the face can sag after losing a lot of weight, especially in the lower part of the face near the chin and neck. During this operation, unnecessary skin is removed, a pronounced contour of the chin and cheekbones is formed, and the face looks firmer.

Combination with other plastic operations

Facelift surgery can be performed in conjunction with other facial plastic surgeries. It is especially convenient to perform the operation together with eyelid plastic surgery, because the same problem of sagging skin is solved. Combined operations are performed under one general anesthesia, healing is also one.

How is facelift surgery performed?

Facelift surgery can be of several types, from corrections to the lower and middle part of the face and the neck area, and lifting the entire face. Although the goal of these operations is very similar - to tighten the skin of the face, fixing the deeper tissues that make up the facial framework and/or to remove unnecessary excess skin, depending on the patient's case, the techniques of the operation are also different. Facelift operations are performed under general anesthesia.

Stretching of the lower and middle part of the face

Lower or mid-face lift surgery can also be called "short scar surgery" because the incisions are usually smaller and are made in the front of the ears, from the hairline to the earlobe. Lifting of the lower part of the face, cheeks and neck is recommended for those patients whose problem areas are the neck, the so-called "turkey neck", chin, sagging cheeks.

Full facelift surgery

In a classic full facelift surgery, incisions are made around the ears and at the hairline. By stretching the tissues in several directions, the contour of the jaw and cheeks is highlighted, and wrinkles are reduced. If necessary, excess skin is also removed. A complete full facelift involves improving the forehead, cheeks, jawline and neck.

Postoperative care

Healing and scarring

After facelift surgery, the face swells and bruises are visible for several weeks. The swelling subsides in about a month. The final result is visible after 6-12 months. Because the incisions are made along the hairline and around the ears, scars are easily hidden. While the scars remain (from 6 months to 1.5 years), it is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and tanning in the solarium.

Special care

A special bandage is worn for the first week after the operation, it is recommended not to urinate on the wounds. While the wounds are healing, it is recommended not to use make-up. Smoking and alcohol can affect the healing process, so these bad habits should be given up at least 1 month before and after surgery. Also, avoid heavy physical exertion and saunas for 1-1.5 months.

Risks of surgery

Complications of surgery are rare, but they can occur. This can be suppuration, bleeding, opening of the wound, in rare cases - noticeable asymmetry of the face. If the patient smokes, has circulatory problems, part of the skin may die. If a nerve is stretched during surgery, some part of the face may be temporarily numb and immobile, which recovers after a few months. Minor hair loss or growth in the incision area is also possible.
