Chin surgery

Chin correction (mentoplasty)

Although chin surgery has only recently become popular, there are more and more patients who want to correct this particular part of the face. Most often, patients complain of a too small, too big, so-called "heavy" chin, its asymmetrical shape after injuries. Chin correction (mentoplasty) is a surgical operation during which a chin proportional to your face is formed and tissues are lifted. Facial features are often softened after chin correction.

Who can have chin surgery?

Improper chin shape

Over the years, the skin of the face loses its elasticity, the tissues begin to descend, an excess of fatty tissue appears, a double chin is formed, which leads to complexation. It happens that even at a young age, the chin looks disproportionate to your face. Surgery is usually required when the chin is underdeveloped or extremely small, disproportionate to other parts of the face (usually there is no symmetry with the nose) or, on the contrary, it is very large and protruding.

Bite problems

Chin surgery is not only a way to change the size and shape of the chin, it is also often performed on patients with bite problems. Chin surgery can be combined and performed together with orthognathic surgeries, when the shape of a person's face is fundamentally changed and a proper bite is formed.

Trauma and bone loss

A few more reasons why you turn to a plastic surgeon for chin correction are chin, facial trauma, bone loss during the aging process. As the bone disappears, the tissues seem to sag, the chin loses its shape and becomes slightly hollow.

How is chin surgery performed?

Chin corrections can be done by bone repositioning, chin implants, or tissue filler injections. First of all, issues related to the patient's health and medication use are discussed during the consultation. Also, the patient is photographed, and his photos are modeled with special programs so that a person can imagine the possible result of the operation.

Chin reduction or augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the nature of the chin correction and the individual case of the patient, the surgeon chooses the most suitable place for the incision - in the oral cavity or in the skin under the chin. Chin correction can also be performed together with liposuction - fat suction from the chin.

Chin reduction surgery

If the patient needs aesthetic chin reduction surgery, he undergoes plastic bone transformation.

Chin augmentation and shape correction can be performed in 2 ways:

  • The desired shape of the chin is formed with a chin implant , when the implant is fixed above the bone with special screws. The incision can be made both inside the mouth and in the lower part of the chin. Silicone or polyethylene implants can be used for chin augmentation. The latter are chosen more often for this operation.
  • With osteotomies , the chin is formed from the patient's own bone by making special cuts and changing the position of the bone. When shaping the chin in this way, the incision is usually made in the mouth, the bony part of the chin is separated and pushed forward. The new position of the chin is recorded and specially reinforced.

Chin injections

Chin injections are a non-surgical way to improve the shape of the chin. Often this method is chosen before the final decision on plastic surgery is made and to see how you will look with a more expressive chin. This procedure is extremely simple, as there is no surgical intervention and anesthesia is not required during it - after local anesthesia, tissue fillers are injected into the chin. It should be remembered that the result of shaping the chin with the help of fillers will be short-term, and from a financial point of view, injection procedures will cost more than a one-time chin surgery.

Postoperative period

Special care

Bruising and swelling may occur immediately after surgery, which should subside in about 2-3 weeks. For the first two days, three times a day, the operated area should be cooled for about 0.5-1 hour, every 3-4 days the wounds should be bandaged. It is very important not to urinate on the wounds. If insoluble sutures were used for the operation, they are removed after 7 days. The incision scar may be visible for several weeks after the operation (if the incision was made on the outer part of the chin), but over time it will completely fade and become invisible.

Healing and scarring

By augmenting the chin with an implant, you will see a beautiful image immediately after the operation. Of course, over time, the swelling will subside and the initial changes will be visible. Here, when bone incisions are made, when the chin is enlarged or reduced, the initial aesthetic image appears after a longer time, because it takes more time for the bone to heal. The final result is visible after about 4-6 months.

Physical activity and bad habits

After chin surgery, it is recommended to sleep on your back for at least 1 week so as not to damage the operated area. Active sports should be avoided for at least 1-2 months, without causing pressure. Bad habits should be avoided both before and after surgery, as they can affect the healing process.
