Breast reduction

Not everyone and not always having a large breast is an advantage - many women suffer from back pain, feel physical and psychological discomfort when playing sports or engaging in other active physical activities, and lose self-confidence. In addition, a large breast sags over time and changes its appearance, so more and more women around the world decide to undergo breast reduction surgery, or in other words, reduction mammoplasty. Breast reduction not only makes everyday life easier, but also improves the quality of life, gives more energy, improves mood and psychological well-being, and most importantly - gives more self-confidence.

When is a breast reduction performed?

There are usually three main reasons that bother women, which prompt them to seek help from plastic surgery doctors.

Physical

Breast reduction becomes a lifesaver for women who experience difficulties in performing daily tasks, feel pain in the back, neck and breasts, and due to excessive sweating, rashes appear under the breasts. Women with extremely large breasts usually avoid sports and active leisure time, which often becomes one of the reasons for weight gain and a higher risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Psychological

Patients with large breasts are also often bothered by factors causing psychological discomfort, such as the inability to dress in clothes they like, relax on the beach, and problems in their intimate life. Often, these problems develop into an inferiority complex, which not only undermines self-confidence, but also prevents one from enjoying life.

Aesthetic

Women also want to reduce their breasts for aesthetic reasons, when after breastfeeding, losing a lot of weight in a short period of time or because of the woman's age, the breast skin stretches, loses its former shape, and the breasts sag.

Important information

The operation is not recommended for women who plan to breastfeed in the future, because the milk ducts leading to and leaving the nipples may have to be cut during the correction. The larger a woman's breasts, the greater the chance that breastfeeding will no longer be possible after surgery.

How to prepare for breast reduction surgery?

Consultation with the doctor

First of all, together with the patient, the size and shape of the breasts that meet the wishes are selected, and all the necessary tests are performed.

Drug use and bad habits

It is recommended not to take anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery, as this may increase the risk of bleeding. It is recommended to stop smoking for at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.

How is breast reduction surgery performed?

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 3 hours. Breast reduction can be done in several ways - the doctor will decide which method is best for each individual case.

Anchor reduction is performed when there is an extremely large excess of unnecessary skin and fatty tissue. The incision is made in the shape of an inverted T anchor.

A vertical reduction with a smaller incision under the breast is performed when less excess tissue needs to be removed.

The surgery removes excess skin and underlying tissue, reduces the size of the breasts and reduces the areola (the area of dark brown skin around the nipple), which often increases as the breasts enlarge. Later, the halo together with the nipple are raised to the pre-operative height and an aesthetic breast shape is formed. After breast reduction, its top is usually empty, so many women also choose breast augmentation with implants.

Postoperative care

Special care

After surgery, patients spend the first day in the clinic. The first month after the operation requires caution and care - it is possible to return to work and resume normal activities after 7-10 days. A special bra must be worn 22-23 hours a day for 4-6 weeks after surgery. It is recommended to sleep on your back for at least a month after surgery.

Healing and scarring

Because the nipple is partially separated from the surrounding breast tissue during surgery and the innervation is slightly disrupted, the sensitivity of the nipple is reduced, but it improves over time. The final result is visible after 4 months, when the shape of the breast is finally formed. Then the sensitivity of the nipple is restored. The postoperative scar should be protected from direct sunlight for at least a year so that it remains as small as possible. The scar usually fades within 2 years.

Active physical activity

Active sports are not recommended for 3 months after surgery.
