Breast plastic surgery

According to research data, about 10% of women have partially or completely retracted nipples, which cause not only psychological discomfort, but can also become a source of health problems. Inverted nipples are not only an aesthetic problem: inverted nipples make breastfeeding difficult, poor hygiene of the areolas causes repeated nipple inflammations, and women begin to lack self-confidence. In order to restore the aesthetic appearance of the breasts and to avoid health problems, plastic surgery of the involved nipples is performed.

When can nipple correction be performed?

Women can have inverted nipples for a number of reasons. Genetically inverted nipples are formed due to milk ducts that are too short or insufficient supporting tissue that causes the nipple to bulge. A nipple defect can also appear after trauma, infectious or oncological breast conditions, complicated breastfeeding.

The method of treatment for involved nipples is recommended by the doctor who has evaluated the case during the consultation. Treatment depends on the degree of nipple involvement. If it is determined that surgical plastic surgery of the inverted nipple is necessary, it can be performed with breast augmentation implants, during a breast lift, or by performing plastic surgery of the inverted nipple only.

Degrees of nipple retraction:

Grade I - gentle pressure on the areola allows the nipple to rise and retain its shape. At the first degree of nipple retraction, breastfeeding is usually not difficult, so this form of nipple retraction is more aesthetic.

Grade II - extraction of the nipples is possible, but more difficult than with the first degree of inversion. In addition, a prolapsed nipple does not maintain projection and has a tendency to indent. With the second degree of indentation of the nipples, breastfeeding is possible, but is more difficult due to damaged milk ducts.

Grade III - the nipples are very involved, the only way to extract them is with the help of a plastic reconstructive surgeon. With III-degree nipple involvement, breastfeeding is not possible, the nipple area is often itchy, and infections occur.

It's important. If the patient has severe breast diseases, the operation cannot be performed.

How do you prepare for nipple correction?

First of all, before the operation, the desired result is discussed with the doctor, all the necessary tests are performed, and the patient's medications, diseases and allergies are discussed. Please note that it is recommended not to take anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery, as this may increase the risk of bleeding. It is also recommended not to smoke for at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.

How is inverted nipple plastic surgery performed?

There are two types of surgical correction of the nipples - by disconnecting the shortened milk duct from the nipple or by leaving the milk duct intact. If it is necessary to disconnect the milk duct from the nipple during the operation, you will not be able to breastfeed after the operation.

The correction of the included nipples is performed according to the patient's request under local or general anesthesia and takes about 1 hour. Small incisions are made at the lower edge of the nipple and the anatomically normal position of the nipple is formed. A nipple reduction can also be performed during the operation. 

Postoperative period

Special care

If dissolvable sutures are used during the operation, they do not need to be removed, but bandages should be retied every 2-3 days. For at least a week after surgery, it is recommended not to lift heavy, avoid heavy physical exertion, and rest more. It is advisable to sleep on your back for 1 month after the operation.

Healing and scarring

For a few days after the operation, you may feel pain, pressure, if necessary, take the medicine prescribed by the doctor. You will see the final breast image in about 4-6 weeks after the nipples have completely healed. The surgical scar will fade over time and become less noticeable.
