Snoring is not only a social, but also a serious medical problem, which negatively affects the health and quality of life of both the snorer himself and those around him. Therefore, not only the snorer, but also his relatives often go to the doctor for this problem.

The serious health and even life-threatening risks that snoring can cause are widely described in the literature .

If a person who snores does not sleep well and feels sleepy during the day, has difficulty concentrating, or is overweight, it is possible to suspect obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA).. Although this syndrome is common and affects an average of one in 50 adults, it should nevertheless be considered a health-threatening condition that needs to be corrected. A patient with suspected OMAS should be examined and, after confirmation of the diagnosis, treated accordingly - surgically or conservatively.

Symptoms are caused by excess tissue in the mouth (soft palate) and/or pharynx (tonsils, tongue).

Diagnostics consists of two procedures: polysomnography and examination of the nose and pharynx with a soft endoscope. Polysomnography is a study performed while the patient is asleep, when the duration of snoring and the frequency of respiratory arrest are recorded. During the examination, the narrowest part of the upper respiratory tract, which causes snoring, is determined.

How is snoring and sleep apnea treated?

After the diagnosis of OMAS, the first step towards recovery for overweight patients is to normalize their weight.

The most effective treatment for snoring and sleep apnea is surgery. Several types of surgical procedures are available: uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and radiofrequency or laser thermoablation of the soft palate.

Uvuliopalatopharyngoplasty

Uvuliopalatopharyngoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue in the throat. This widens the airways and allows airflow to enter the lower airways more easily.

How is the operation performed?

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 1.5 hours. During the operation, the palatine tonsils, part of the soft palate and the tongue are removed. A tongue and soft palate "patch" is formed from excess tongue and soft palate mucosa, lifted and attached to the soft palate with dissolvable sutures. In this way, a higher soft palate is formed, it is fixed, so the space behind the soft palate increases and there is no obstacle to the passage of air. In order to fix the lateral walls of the pharynx, the anterior and posterior arches of the mouth are sutured together at the end of the operation.

What is important to pay attention to after surgery?

Physical activity should be avoided for a week after surgery.

It is mandatory to follow a diet: do not eat fruits (except bananas), honey and chocolate, do not drink carbonated drinks, fruit juices, it is advisable to eat soft food.

Do not smoke for 2 weeks, avoid frequent coughing or sneezing.

Pain can be felt for about three weeks.

At about 6 weeks, there may be a change in the voice.

The results of the operation can be felt after the surgical wounds have completely healed and the swelling of the soft palate subsides - after about 3-4 weeks.
