Nasal polyposis is one of the most common chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

Growing polyps, protruding into the nasal cavity, disturb the air flow and cause characteristic symptoms: nasal obstruction, discharge from the nose, a feeling of pressure, tightness in the face . When breathing through the nose becomes difficult, the patient begins to breathe through the mouth, may start snoring. Paranasal polyps play a role in recurrent sinus infections. Polyps often cause the sense of smell to deteriorate or even disappear completely.

During the examination, the otorhinolaryngologist determines the patient's condition according to the severity of the disease (mild/moderate/severe) and selects the necessary treatment.

Polypectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat nasal polyposis when medical treatment is ineffective.

How is the operation performed?

The operation can be performed under local or general anesthesia. On average, it lasts up to 30 minutes, the specific duration depends on the number of polyps in the nasal cavity.

Polyps are removed through the nasal cavity. Possible procedures:

Intranasal polypectomy is performed when the polyps are visible and easily accessible. Polyps are removed with special forceps.

Endoscopic polypectomy is performed when the polyps are smaller, less visible, located in the upper part of the nasal mucosa or in the sinuses. In this case, an endoscope is used.

After the operation, the nasal passages are tamped with special tampons, and they are usually removed the next day.

What is important to pay attention to after surgery?

No smoking for 2-3 weeks.

For 2 weeks, it is advisable not to blow your nose and avoid physical activities that raise blood pressure, as bleeding may occur.

For 2 weeks after surgery, it is recommended to wash the nose with sea water and use oil drops.

If there are concomitant diseases (for example, deviation of the nasal septum) or a prolonged course of the disease, the sense of smell may not recover after the operation.
