An increase in adenoids causes nasal obstruction (which makes it difficult for the child to breathe), long-lasting runny noses, often recurring ear infections, sinusitis or exacerbations of other diseases - asthma, allergies. Adenoids are collections of lymphoid tissue located in the pharynx; popularly they are also called polyps.

Frequent upper respiratory tract infections or allergies can cause adenoids to enlarge.

Most often, adenoid enlargement (hypertrophy) occurs in children aged 2-10 years.

When and why should you be concerned?

Problems caused by enlarged adenoids should not be ignored, thinking that the child will recover on its own. Untreated enlargement of adenoids can have serious consequences for the child's psychomotor development.

Due to constant nasal obstruction, the child sleeps poorly at night, is sleepy and tired during the day, and becomes apathetic. Frequent ear infections can cause "clogging of the ears", as a result of which the child begins to hear less, and the concentration of attention is disturbed. Changes in the child's speech are also characteristic: it becomes muffled, indistinct, the pronunciation of consonants is disturbed - the so-called "nasal speech" appears. All these symptoms disrupt the child's daily cognitive processes, which are extremely important up to the age of 10. If the symptoms are prolonged, the child's abilities can lag quite significantly.

How is adenoid removal surgery performed?

The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 20 minutes. During the operation, an enlarged tonsil is removed through the mouth with a special instrument. By removing the obstruction in the nasopharynx, the path for air to enter the lower respiratory tract is restored.

What is important to pay attention to after surgery?

For 5 days after the operation, you must follow a diet: do not eat fruits (except bananas), honey and chocolate, do not drink carbonated drinks, fruit juices.

After surgery, you can eat ice cream - it acts as a local pain reliever.

After surgery, nasal "stuffing" is possible, lasting from several days to several weeks.
