What is hip replacement?
Primary replacement of the hip joint (endoprosthesis) is an operation during which the worn articular surfaces of the bone are removed and mechanical surfaces of the implant are implanted in their place - an artificial joint. Generally, a hip replacement consists of three parts: the ischial component, the femoral component, and the femoral head.
During hip joint endoprosthetics, implants are fixed with bone cement or cementless fixation after preparing the bone sockets with special bone cutters and chisels. The articulating surfaces, i.e. the socket of the socket component, can be made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene or ceramics, the femoral heads are made of metal alloys or ceramics.
The type of implant used and the method of fixation to the bone are chosen by the operating orthopedic traumatologist, taking into account the individual anatomical parameters of the patients - bone quality, degree of osteoporosis and the patient's activity level. Hip replacement helps restore mobility, relieve pain and improve quality of life.
Who is hip replacement performed for?
This surgery is safely and effectively performed on people of all ages who experience hip pain that limits normal daily physical activity - standing, walking, exercising. The operation is purposeful and is prescribed in cases where conservative treatment methods do not help (kinesitherapy, physical rehabilitation, medication, etc.).
Before prescribing hip arthroplasty, it is very important to thoroughly assess the person's level of physical activity, radiological changes and bone quality, general physical health and identify risk factors that may influence the results of surgical treatment.
How to prepare for surgery?
This is a surgical procedure that usually involves the use of regional anesthesia. Before the operation, it is recommended to give up bad habits, because alcohol and tobacco can affect the body's recovery and healing. Targeted consultation of a rehabilitator or physiotherapist regarding physical preparation before and after surgery. General health examinations are recommended before surgery.
How is hip replacement performed?
Hip joint replacement is performed under general or spinal anesthesia after making a minimally invasive long incision in the area of the operated hip joint. The size of the incision depends on the clinical situation and the chosen surgical method.
During the operation, the worn upper part of the femur (head) is removed, a new socket is surgically formed and a stem is implanted into the femur. Then, original implants of the appropriate size are implanted in the intended places.
Timely endoprosthesis of the hip joint helps to fully restore impaired joint functions, mobility, get rid of pain and improves the patient's quality of life.
Postoperative period and healing
Special care
After the operation, most patients feel swelling, stiffness and general discomfort of the operated area during the healing period of the surgical wound and the bed. You can relieve these and other unpleasant sensations with medications prescribed by your doctor.
Swelling of the operated area may occur 7-10 days after surgery (and sometimes longer). This is a normal side effect. The leg should be kept elevated above the level of the heart with a pillow or other support placed at the calf or ankle. Ice effectively suppresses the swelling of the operated area (it cannot be applied directly to the skin, ice should be wrapped in a clean cloth and a bag so that the condensate does not wet the postoperative wounds). For best results, keep ice wrapped in a cloth/bag for 20 minutes, 3-4 times a day. Also, after consulting a doctor, swelling can be reduced by wearing special compression stockings.
Healing
Follow all recommendations from your surgeon and physical therapist regarding nutrition, exercise, and wound care at home. The speed of healing and recovery of the whole body depends on how carefully you follow the instructions.
After the operation, many patients have to use crutches for 4-6 weeks, after that, aids for movement become unnecessary. Healing will require approximately 2 months of physical rehabilitation, which can be continued on an outpatient basis to achieve the full effect of the treatment.
Scarring
Hip replacement surgery usually involves a minimal incision of 8-12 cm in length, which leaves a scar as it heals. Its size, color, texture and general healing are different and depend on the patient's general condition and reaction to the injury.
By using the preparations individually prescribed for you and following all post-operative instructions, the scar will become less noticeable over time.
