When is knee arthroscopy necessary?

The knee joint starts to ache for several common reasons - after suffering an injury or suffering from joint diseases. Injuries are accompanied by meniscal tears, ligament damage, and these diseases are cartilage inflammations, joint instability, damaged structures of the joint itself, which heal with difficulty or not at all. In some cases, the knee joint needs to be replaced. And before that was necessary, one of the most popular methods of knee joint treatment, returning the freedom of active movement without pain, is knee arthroscopy.

Who can undergo knee arthroscopy?

Arthroscopic surgery is usually performed on patients who have suffered injuries to the knee joint or diseases that have damaged the joint structures. Sometimes the arthroscope is also used in completely different operations, in order to achieve the best possible view and accuracy.

How to prepare for surgery?

This is a surgical procedure that usually involves the use of local anesthesia. Before the operation, it is recommended to give up bad habits, because alcohol and tobacco can affect the body's recovery and healing. Targeted consultation of a rehabilitator or physiotherapist regarding physical preparation before and after surgery. General health examinations are recommended before surgery.

How is knee arthroscopy performed?

First of all, it is a more modern, minimally invasive surgical treatment that involves two very small incisions, approximately 0.5 to 1 cm long. An arthroscope, a small optical device with a video camera, is inserted through one incision, and the instruments required for the operation are inserted through the other.

The knee joint itself is probably one of the easiest joints to reach because it is the largest. With the help of an arthroscope, the doctor can see the damaged joint structures perfectly and very closely on the screen, can perform all the necessary diagnostic procedures and start treatment.

Postoperative period and healing

Special care

In the first days after surgery, it is especially important to reduce swelling. Swelling of the operated area is effectively suppressed by the use of ice (it cannot be applied directly to the skin, the ice should be wrapped in a clean cloth and bag so that the condensate does not wet the postoperative wounds), certain physical exercises and the use of anti-inflammatory medications. It is also recommended to gently massage the patella and around the knee joint: this improves blood circulation and promotes the regeneration process.

Use all these procedures only after consulting your doctor.

Healing

Since this operation is minimally invasive, it will be possible to think about the operated leg the next day and start light rehabilitation exercises selected by specialists. Also, don't forget to bandage the wound regularly.

A full recovery will require approximately 6 months of physical rehabilitation.

Scarring

During knee arthroscopy, the arthroscopic technology used allows to operate with minimal tissue damage, so the scars remain small, they quickly fade and become practically invisible.
