A hysteroscope is a thin telescope with a light source and a camera. Through it, the uterus is filled with gas or liquid, and surgical instruments can also be inserted.

A hysteroscopy is performed to evaluate the uterine cavity, lining, and fallopian tube openings. Thus, it is performed in case of unusual bleeding from the uterus, infertility, repeated miscarriages, unusual changes recorded by radiological examination methods, if there is a need to evaluate the endometrial discharge or neoplastic changes.

How is hysteroscopy surgery performed?

Depending on the purpose of hysteroscopy, diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy are used. In both cases, this procedure is equivalent to surgery, so it is performed under general or local anesthesia.

A hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and the dilated cervix. In order to assess its cavity or perform surgical procedures, the uterus is stretched, filling it with gas or liquid.

The duration of hysteroscopy depends on the scope of the procedure - whether only diagnostics or surgical operation is performed.

After hysteroscopy, you should refrain from swimming and sexual intercourse for three weeks, and do not use tampons.
