A femoral hernia is a protrusion of the peritoneum and organs of the abdominal cavity through the femoral canal into the subcutaneous tissue of the thigh. Femoral hernia is more common in women. Operative treatment is necessary due to the risk of hernia entrapment.

How is the operation performed?

The operation is performed under spinal or general anesthesia. The duration of the operation depends on the chosen method of operation and the size of the hernia and can be 1-2 hours.

Femoral hernia can be operated on open or laparoscopically.

In open surgery, plastic surgery can be performed using the patient's own tissues.

During laparoscopic surgery, plastic surgery is always performed using a special synthetic mesh. The laparoscopic surgical method allows patients to return to their normal rhythm of life faster, the period of incapacity for work is much shorter compared to open surgeries, and the risk of surgical wound complications is lower. Small incisions are made in the abdominal wall, through which a small laparoscopic video camera and surgical instruments are inserted into the abdominal cavity. The abdominal cavity is filled with CO2 gas, thus creating a working environment for the surgeon. All the surgeon's operations are performed while watching the image on the screen.

What do you need to know after surgery?

• The surgical wound is bandaged every other day, the sutures are removed after 7-10 days.
• Do not urinate on surgical incisions for 5 days after surgery.
• Constipation should be avoided.
• Greater physical exertion should be avoided from 2 weeks to 1 month - it depends on the method of the performed operation.
