Primary or postoperative abdominal wall hernia surgery (abdominal wall hernioplasty ) is performed after the diagnosis of abdominal wall hernia.

Abdominal hernia is a space in the abdominal wall that intermittently or permanently contains the organs of the abdominal cavity. Since the organs inside the hernia are constantly traumatized, inflammation can occur. Also, organs can grow to the abdominal wall, which requires urgent surgery.

How is the operation performed?

Abdominal hernia surgery is usually performed under general or spinal anesthesia. In some cases, the operation can be performed under local anesthesia.

During surgery, an incision is made in the navel area. The hernia sac is separated. The bag can be opened if necessary to assess the contents. If the hernia sac contains internal organs (small or large intestine, fat), their viability is assessed. If it is doubtful, it may be necessary to additionally remove the damaged part of the organ. The excess hernia sac is removed and the hernia gate is sutured.

In the case of a small hernia, its gate is simply sewn up, forming several layers of sutures. If the hernia is large, then a special synthetic mesh will be used for hernia plastic surgery, which can be fixed on the aponeurosis of the rectus abdominis muscle or under the rectus abdominis muscle itself, according to the methodology chosen by the surgeon.

Postoperative period:

Drinking and eating light, well-digestible food is allowed already the next day after the operation.

The surgical wound is bandaged every other day, the sutures are removed after 7-10 days.

It is recommended to get out of bed the next day (to prevent thromboembolism).

Perform breathing exercises to improve lung ventilation.

Avoid constipation.
