Professional oral hygiene
White, shining and most importantly healthy teeth are one of your most beautiful decorations. Regular and responsible tooth brushing and professional oral hygiene performed at least once a year help to get rid of bacteria accumulating on the surface of the teeth and in the grooves of the gums, which turn sugar and other carbohydrates into acids that destroy the structure of the teeth. The long-term consequences of this are frequent tooth decay, damage to the gums and surrounding tissues, which can develop into diseases that even lead to tooth loss.
When and for whom is professional oral hygiene performed?
Professional oral hygiene is recommended for everyone who wants to maintain a healthy oral cavity, prevent diseases caused by plaque and enjoy strong teeth and a beautiful smile. It is impossible to reach all the surfaces of the teeth with a toothbrush, and food residues and plaque still remain when cleaning between the teeth with floss or using an oral irrigator. Improperly cleaned plaque hardens - this is how tartar is formed, where bacteria accumulate that cause tooth decay, oral mucosa and periodontal diseases. Due to the formed stones, the color of the teeth may change even by several tones, the gums may bleed, and bad breath may appear.
For adults
For adults who want to maintain healthy, strong and beautiful teeth, professional oral hygiene is recommended 1-2 times a year or more often. The number of procedures depends on the personal oral hygiene habits of each patient.
For children
Oral hygiene is also recommended once a year for children with erupted permanent teeth. If you start visiting an oral hygienist's office at an early age, professional oral hygiene eventually becomes a self-evident habit.
Treating teeth orthodontically
When straightening your teeth with the help of braces and dental crowns, special attention should be paid to the care of the oral cavity and professional oral hygiene should be performed every 3-4 months. Due to poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, caries may develop faster and teeth may begin to decay.
For those with dental diseases
Those suffering from tooth and gum (periodontal) diseases, who have a greater tendency to build up dental plaque, should pay special attention to oral hygiene. Professional oral hygiene performed every few months (monthly in more severe cases) reduces the symptoms of the disease, especially gum disease and pain.
Advantages of professional oral hygiene
• Prevents the formation of teeth and gum diseases;
• Reduces the symptoms of periodontitis diseases, reduces gum bleeding;
• Helps to get rid of bad breath;
• Slightly whitens teeth, as all plaque is thoroughly cleaned;
How is professional oral hygiene performed?
Professional oral hygiene takes about 1-1.5 hours. If the patient's pain level is very low or he has a strong nausea reflex, professional oral hygiene can be performed with local anesthesia.
Hygiene for adults
An ultrasonic scaler is primarily used during professional oral hygiene, which gently removes dental plaque and stones without pain and without damaging the tooth surface.
Dirt and hard and soft deposits from hard-to-reach areas are removed mechanically with hand tools.
After thorough cleaning of plaque and stones, air abrasion with special "Air flow" technology is used, air with non-scratching calcium carbonate (pearl) powder is sprayed onto the surface of the tooth with a strong stream. In this way, plaques and pigment spots caused by the consumption of coloring foods are cleaned. After the procedure, the color of the teeth becomes visibly whiter and brighter.
Next, the teeth are polished with rubber discs, brushes and polishing paste. If necessary, applications of mineral and healing substances are performed, sensitive teeth and their necks, and gums prone to inflammation are strengthened.
Finally, introducing the patient to proper oral hygiene care at home, if necessary, mouthwashes or toothpaste that reduce tooth sensitivity are recommended.
Hygiene for children
The process of professional oral hygiene is simpler for children compared to adults. Usually, if the child's oral hygiene condition is not very bad, the oral hygiene specialist cleans dental plaque mechanically, sprays the teeth with glycerin and applies polishing paste.
