Covering teeth with sealants is a preventive measure that protects teeth from caries. The occurrence of tooth decay is influenced by several factors: insufficient oral hygiene, heredity and irrational diet: consuming too many carbohydrates, insufficient amount of fluoride in drinking water.
The first permanent teeth (molars) erupt in 5-7 year old children. The hand movements of a child of this age are not yet sufficiently coordinated to be able to properly clean and take care of the teeth, so uncleaned or poorly cleaned dental plaque accumulates in the grooves of the teeth, and caries develops.
Sealants are a liquid filling material that is used to fill the grooves of the teeth, thus preventing the accumulation of plaque in them and making the teeth easier to clean.
