What is laparoscopic marginal gastric resection?

Laparoscopic marginal gastric resection (Gastric sleeve). During this operation, the patient's stomach is reduced by 90-93 percent. During the operation, the abdominal (abdominal) surgeon creates a banana-shaped sleeve from the patient's stomach. The cut part of the stomach is removed from the abdominal cavity. This reduces the production of the hunger hormone ghrelin, along with the feeling of hunger. No foreign bodies are used during the operation - stomach reduction is performed surgically. After surgery, food moves through the intestines in a natural way. In the first two years after surgery, about 60 percent fall. overweight.

Who is laparoscopic marginal gastrectomy?

This surgery is recommended for people with a body mass index (BMI) above 35 and a high risk of obesity-related diseases: cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, etc.). Surgery is performed if previously applied conservative treatment methods (increasing physical activity, diet regulation, etc.) were not effective.

This surgical operation is performed after assessing the general physical health of the patient and identifying risk factors that may affect the results of the surgical treatment.

How to prepare for surgery?

In preparation for the operation, it is necessary to follow a special diet individually prescribed by a dietician (depending on the situation, the diet can be prescribed a month or 2 weeks before the operation). In many cases, it may be necessary to reduce the amount of calories consumed, moderate the consumption of carbohydrates (for example, sweets, potatoes, pasta) and consume more protein-rich products: vegetables, lean meat, drink low-calorie liquids.

It is also recommended to abstain from caffeinated beverages for about a month before surgery.

How is the procedure performed?

Laparoscopic marginal gastric resection is performed under general anesthesia. Advanced technologies are used during the operation: a laparoscope with an integrated high-definition video camera and other special instruments.

Most often, 5-6 skin incisions up to 5-20 mm are made for the patient. Through them, instruments are introduced into the abdominal cavity, with the help of which a tube is surgically formed. It ensures the connection of the stomach with the small intestine and preserves the integrity of the digestive tract and all its functions. Finally, the larger part of the stomach, which produces hormones that stimulate the appetite, is removed. In this way, the stomach is reduced by as much as 65-80 percent.

Postoperative period and healing

After each operation, the patient has an appointment with a dietitian before leaving the clinic. During the visit, the patient's diet after surgery is arranged. The results of the operation and the healing process directly depend on how closely the instructions will be followed. The main principles of nutrition during recovery after surgery should be the following:

  • Eat slowly, in small portions. Drink liquids 20-30 minutes after a meal.
  • Eat small pieces of food, chew thoroughly.
  • Avoid foods high in fat, carbohydrates and sugar.
  • Drink enough water, but do so between meals, not during meals.

It is a minimally invasive operation, so the skin incisions made during it will heal within a couple of weeks: during this period, you can gradually return to your normal routine. However, it is important to note that your stomach will heal for approximately 6-8 weeks after the surgical intervention, so it is necessary to follow the diet and rest regimen prescribed by the doctor.

Scarring

When performing laparoscopic marginal gastric resection, the laparoscope technology used allows for minimal tissue damage, so the scars remain small, they quickly fade and become practically invisible.
